Oil Change

Benefits of a Timely Oil Change

Oil changes are the simplest way to keep your car, truck, or SUV running for a long time. They are also one of the most affordable auto repairs or preventative maintenance a person can perform on their car. Despite this fact, 25% of drivers have low, dirty, or leaking oil according to CarCare.org. All vehicles require a certain amount of clean oil in order to keep the car engine lubricated and parts moving, slow down wear and tear, and to prevent dirt buildup and overheating. Delaying timely oil changes or skipping them altogether will only make your car, truck, or SUV more prone to mechanical problems.

how to tell if it is time to change your oil

At Kia of Murfreesboro, we check and change your oil for you. However, there is basic car care every driver should know how to perform. The old adage is to change your oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. However, newer cars can go as long as 5,000 - 10,000 miles before an oil change is required. So which one is right for you? The first thing you want to do is refer to your owner's manual and adhere to those guidelines. However, keep in mind that some oil change recommendations are based on your average driving condition. Rougher driver conditions could mean sooner oil changes. This is where knowing how to check your oil levels can benefit you.

brake calipers

  • Park your car on level ground
  • If your car is warm, allow you engine time to cool to avoid burning yourself
  • Open the hood of your car
  • Locate the dipstick
  • Pull the dipstick out and wipe off
  • Insert the dipstick all the way back in and take the dipstick back out. Identify how far up the stick the oil has come or where the oil has stopped. If the oil stopped below the low or minimum mark you oil level is too low and it is time to change or add more oil.

When checking your oil levels, you can also check for proper color, dirt and unwanted materials. Your oil should be brown or black in color and should be free of metal particles. If you notice any of these, you should take your car into the Kia of Murfreesboro Service Department as soon as possible.
